Sophie, Celeste and I went on a short overnight bikepacking adventure to Birds Hill Provincial Park. We mounted a rack on Sophie's bike for her to carry a loaded panier. The kids were enthusiastic and energetic, the route was scenic and enjoyable, and a very nice time was had by all.

The route follows bike paths for the first 25 km northbound across Winnipeg. After passing under the Perimeter Highway (on a bike path) the route moves to quiet country side roads for the next 12 km, until reaching the Floodway and entering the park for the final 7 km.

We left home at 10:30 on June 23, arriving at the Forks for lunch at noon. We were caught under a thunderstorm in the afternoon, during which we spent 45 minutes under a trailside shelter (Celeste spent the entire time under a bench). The girls maintained high spirits and a positive attitude despite the weather. The sun returns to warm us up and dry the tops of our paniers (the inside wasn't wet). Although more grey clouds blew in from the northwest, we only got a few light scattered raindrops for the remainder of the ride.

The kids chose a campsite, we set the tent, and made our way to the beach for a swim. We cooked chili, and enjoyed giant marshmallows and popcorn over the fire.

I woke at sunrise (6:00) while the kids slept later (until 8:45). We had breakfast, packed, and enjoyed a hot, sunny, and wind-free ride reversing our route to the Forks, where we ate lunch and met Andrea. The four of us rode home together.
