MUUG's Mugs
MUUG's Mugs (2004)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix S3000, 3.2MP (2048x1536 orig. res.), auto mode (F2.8, 1/2 sec.), 17x22" orig. size, 6" base, 45°, 40" (camera to target), incand. lighting, taken 2004-11-14.

Description: My second attempt at a phantogram (before I knew the rules for taking better photos, hence the large aperture), and the image is a bit blurry in the details, but not too bad. This was meant to be printed at letter size (i.e. half the original size), and uses twice the normal base and target distance. This phantogram print was redone recently, starting with the original photos. I used The GIMP to do the perspective transformation and resizing, and AnaBuilder to generate the anaglyph, using the Ghost Buster filter. The composition is a tribute to the Manitoba UNIX User Group, showing various newsletters, coffee mugs, and a paperweight that were collected over the past 18 years.

Havana Club
Havana Club (2005)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix S3000, 3.2MP (2048x1536 orig. res.), aperture priority mode (F8.2, 1/2 sec.), 3" base, 45°, 24" (camera to target), on-camera flash plus incand. back-lighting (to reduce shadows), taken 2005-02-28.

Description: One of my more recent attempts at a phantogram, using The GIMP to do the perspective transformation and resizing, and AnaBuilder to generate the anaglyph, using the Ghost Buster filter. Theres some unfortunate ghosting around the bottle cap (against the plain blue background), so I think I need a more advanced tutorial on deghosting in AnaBuilder. (Hint to Didier. :) A lower-res. version of this one was submitted to the 2005 Dabiri Awards. The composition is one of several I did with various souvenirs brought back from my winter vacation in Cuba. I had originally though of doing this one as a series of frames, with the truck pulling up to the bottle, which would then have a gas-pump nozzle on it, to fill the tank of the truck. (Sort of an ad campaign that never was...) However, the truck was given to my nephew as a birthday gift (the original purpose in buying it), before I ever got around to doing the other shots (no pun intended... OK, partly intended). I'm now thinking I might laminate a few copies of this to use as placemats.

Away in a Manger
Away in a Manger (2005)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix S3000, 3.2MP (2048x1536 orig. res.), aperture priority mode (F8.2, 1/2 sec.), 3" base, 45°, 24" (camera to target), indirect natural lighting, taken 2005-11-23.

Description: One of my more successful recent phantograms, using The GIMP to do the perspective transformation and resizing, and AnaBuilder to generate the anaglyph, using the Ghost Buster filter. Theres very little ghosting except around the heads of the taller figurines. The figurines were laid out on top of a 8.5x11 inch piece of boxboard. This gave the background a bit of texture, to help conceal ghosting, and also the appearance of sand. (My first thought was to use a piece of sandpaper, but I didn't have one of the appropriate size on hand.) The background is more dull than Id like, but otherwise, I'm very happy with the results. A smaller version of this one was used for my Christmas cards this year.

Quad Tracks
Quad Tracks (2005)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix S3000, 3.2MP (2048x1536 orig. res.), aperture priority mode (F8.2, 1/2 sec.), 3" base, 45°, 24" (camera to target), indirect natural lighting, taken 2005-12-28.

Description: My new father-in-law makes wooden toys. This phantogram features one of his quads given as a gift to my nephew, taken just after Christmas. The GIMP was used to do the perspective transformation and resizing, and AnaBuilder to generate the anaglyph, using the Ghost Buster filter. There's very little ghosting except where there's high contrast. The toy was laid out on top of a 8.5x11 inch sheet of sandpaper. This gave the background a bit of texture, to help conceal ghosting, and also the appearance of sand. A bit of loose beach sand was placed under the wheels to give the appearance of the tires spinning in the sand.

Beachcomber
Beachcomber (2007)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix E550, 6.2MP (2848x2136 orig. res.), aperture priority mode (F8, 1/8 sec.), 65mm base, 45°, 24" (camera to target), indirect natural lighting, taken 2007-10-20.

Description: Canada goose on a driftwood log on a sandy beach... Vintage Canadiana!. (This is an actual size print of a wood-carving I was given as a gift for a presentation I did many years ago at a technical conference.) The sculpture was placed on an 8.5x11 sheet of sandpaper. This gave the appearance of sand and helped conceal ghosting. The GIMP was used to do the perspective transformation and resizing, and AnaBuilder to generate the anaglyph, using the Ghost Buster filter. There's very little ghosting except where there's high contrast.

St. Mungos Map
St. Mungos Map (2008)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix E550, 6.2MP (2848x2136 orig. res.), automatic mode (F2.8, 1/340 sec.), approx. 6" base, 45°, approx. 4' (camera to target), diffused daylight, taken 2008-06-13.

Description: This is a shot of a cast relief map, found in the plaza in front of St. Mungos Church in Glasgow. Taken free hand (i.e. cha-cha, no tripod nor any precise measurements taken) while on vacation in Scotland. The GIMP was used to do correction for the wide-angle lens distortion, and the perspective transformation, and AnaBuilder to generate the anaglyph, using the Ghost Buster filter. The GIMP was then used to mask out the background, which was distracting and hard to fuse, leaving just the disc containing the map.

Lady Stairs House
Lady Stairs House (2008)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix E550, 6.2MP (2848x2136 orig. res.), automatic mode (F3.6, 1/120 sec.), cha-cha with unknown base, angle and distance, in diffused daylight, taken 2008-06-12.

Description: This is the restoration marker on a wall of Lady Stairs House, now the home of the Edinburgh Writers Museum. The perspective transformation and alignment of left and right images was trickier than you might think, for a fairly rectangular structure.

Do Your Own Thing
Do Your Own Thing (2006)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix E550, 3.2MP (2048x1536 orig. res.), aperture priority mode (F8.2, 1/6 sec.), 5" base, 45°, 24" (camera to target), indirect natural lighting, taken 2005-03-28.

Description: This one was inspired by the film March of the Penguins. The image of the penguins cradling their eggs on their feet and keeping them warm under their bellies stuck with me, so I thought of doing this comical send-up of a group of non-conformist penguins. The GIMP was used to do the perspective transformation and resizing, and AnaBuilder to generate the anaglyph, using the Ghost Buster filter. Unfortunately, theres a fair bit of ghosting due to the high contrast. The background on this one is a terry towel, to give the impression of snow-covered ground.

St. Isidore in the Clouds
St. Isidore in the Clouds (2005)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix S3000, 3.2MP (2048x1536 orig. res.), aperture priority mode (F8.2, 1/3 sec.), 3" base, 45°, 24" (camera to target), indirect natural lighting, taken 2005-03-05.

Description: One of my early favourites. I got the statue as a gag gift, and thought it would make an amusing subject. The clouds are made of cotton batting, with blue-grey construction paper as the background sky. The GIMP was used to do the perspective transformation and resizing, and AnaBuilder to generate the anaglyph, using the Ghost Buster filter. Theres a bit of ghosting in the high contrast parts, but the overall effect is rather good anyway.

Mansión Xanadú
Mansión Xanadú (2005)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix S3000, 3.2MP (2048x1536 orig. res.), auto. mode (F2.8, 1/60 sec.), free-hand shot, approx. 7.5" base, 45°, 30" (camera to target), flash, taken 2005-02-15.

Description: One of my early attempts at a free-hand phantogram. Not the most successful, but I didnt want to miss this opportunity while on vacation. Natural lighting was very dim here, and I didnt have a tripod with me, so I had to resort to flash. Also, all measurements are eye-balled and very approximate. All things considered, the result wasnt too bad so I thought it was worth sharing anyway. The GIMP was used to do the transformation and resizing; I used raised edges of the table to align the grid for the perspective transform. AnaBuilder was used to generate the anaglyph, using the Ghost Buster filter. The floor and table legs are probably the most distracting elements, as theyre hard to fuse. Flash shadows on the floor are also distracting, but the details on the table-top came out quite nicely.

Out of Bounds!
Out of Bounds! (2007)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix E550, 6.2MP (2848x2136 orig. res.), automatic mode (F5.7, 1/600 sec.), approx. 2' base, 45°, approx. 12' (camera to target), direct sunlight, taken 2007-08-22.

Description: This is a shot of an actual brick wall of The Pembina Hotel in Winnipeg, where this much-larger-than-life football appears to be bursting through the wall. It's a sponsor promo for the Canadian Football League. (The sponsor's banner is cut off on the right edge of the print.) Taken free hand, while cycling to work. The GIMP was used to do correction for the wide-angle lens distortion, and the perspective transformation, and AnaBuilder to generate the anaglyph, using the Ghost Buster filter. There's a fair bit of ghosting around the football, due to its high contrast and the direct sunlight. It's also a bit too hyper, making it harder to fuse the images of the football. (I should reshoot more carefully, on a cloudy day.)

Banbury Scarecrow
Banbury Scarecrow (2008)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix E550, 6.2MP (2848x2136 orig. res.), automatic mode (F3.6, 1/8 sec.), approx. 3" base, 50°, approx. 2' (camera to target), diffused daylight, taken 2008-05-17.

Description: This is a shot of a scarecrow doll in a wooden box, found among other kitsch at the Banbury House Inn, a quaint little B&B in Wolseley, Saskatchewan. Taken free hand (i.e. cha-cha, no tripod nor any precise measurements taken). The GIMP was used to do the perspective transformation, and AnaBuilder to generate the anaglyph, using the Ghost Buster filter, and altering the colours (red on shirt and orange pants) to reduce retinal rivalry.

Romanesco Broccoli
Romanesco Broccoli (2009)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix E550, 6.2MP (2848x2136 orig. res.), automatic mode (F3.4, 1/97 sec.), approx. 6" base, 45°, approx. 4' (camera to target), diffused daylight, taken 2009-11-13.

Description: Romanesco broccoli, or Roman cauliflower, is a variety of broccoflower that has lovely fractal-like spirals. Taken free hand (i.e. cha-cha, no tripod nor any precise measurements taken) at an outdoor market in Montreal, on an unusually warm November day. The GIMP was used to do the perspective transformation, and AnaBuilder to generate the anaglyph, using the Ghost Buster filter.

Geejay Mushroom
Geejay Mushroom (2010)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix E550, 6.2MP (2848x2136 orig. res.), automatic mode (F3.6, 1/70 sec.), approx. 3" base, 45°, approx. 4' (camera to target), diffused daylight, taken 2010-08-08.

Description: Wild mushroom found near a hiking trail north of Geejay Lake, Ontario. Taken free hand (i.e. cha-cha, no tripod nor any precise measurements taken) using twigs as a makeshift frame. There's a window violation in the top-right corner, but I didnt want to crop too much off the top. The GIMP was used to do the perspective transformation, and AnaBuilder to generate the anaglyph, using the Ghost Buster filter.

Another Trick on the Wall
Another Trick on the Wall (2009)

Photo details: Fuji FinePix E550, 6.2MP (2848x2136 orig. res.), automatic mode (F2.8, 1/80 sec.), approx. 6" base, 45°, approx. 4' (camera to target), diffused daylight, taken 2009-11-13.

Description: A seasonal wall decoration in Old Montreal, hanging above a sculpture. Taken "free hand" (i.e. cha-cha, no tripod nor any precise measurements taken), on an unusually warm November day. The GIMP was used to do the perspective transformation, and AnaBuilder to generate the anaglyph, using the "Ghost Buster" filter.
