User Defined Home Pages

If you are a UNIX user with a relatively small amount of information that you wish to display, and you have access to a system running an HTTP server, then the following can be done to set up your personal home page.

Create a directory called public_html under your home directory.
- cd ~
- mkdir public_html
- chmod a+rx public_html
Create a home page file, called index.html, in the public_html directory.
You can start out your home page by copying the source from a template.
Make sure that your index.html file has world read permissions.
- chmod a+r index.html
Make sure that your HOME directory has execute permissions for all.
- chmod a+x ~
Your URL will be: http://servername/~username/
Note that you may not have to login directly to the HTTP server. You can set up and edit your Web page(s) on any machine that lets you access your home directory's contents, and that shares those files with the server.

A home page locator gateway program can be useful to find users' home pages on a large system.
