Style and Substance
Tips on writing good HTML documents:
- Adopt a simple, clean layout style, and stick to it.
- Use a template document (or a few)
to be consistent, and to minimize errors.
- Avoid non-standard HTML extensions,
and test your documents using several different browsers.
- Keep documents to a reasonable length, and avoid overusing graphics.
- Use graphics to convey information, not just for "flash,"
but also provide suitable textual information (using ALT=)
for text-only browsers.
- Make good use of references; don't limit yourself to a linear or
hierarchical structure. ("The medium is the message.")
- Provide a clear and concise index for each directory.
- Read up on HTML style and design issues:
- Check your code with tools like
weblint and
verify_links.
