Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What is the e-mail address for the help centre?

A: The main e-mail address is helpctr [at] cs (dot) umanitoba (dot) ca, but the following aliases will also reach us (with a @cs.umanitoba.ca suffix):

Note: These aliases all point to the same place - please send your email to only one of the listed addresses.

Q: What kind of questions can you answer?

A: We can help you with specific, focused questions that deal with your understanding of topics in first and second year Computer Science courses or problems you are having with parts of an assignment.

Note: We can not give you answers to assignment questions or write code for you. We are here to help you learn, not do your work for you!

Q: Can I book an apointment? (Do I need to book an apointment?)

A: No, but don't worry if the room looks full... we rotate through everyone, and will get to you as soon as we can. This allows us to help more people than if we booked appointments for fixed time intervals.

Q: I can't come during the posted hours. Can I see you another time?

A: No, we're paid hourly, and can only see students during the posted hours. However, you can post your questions on the course forums, ask your professor for help, or send us an email (address above).

Q: It's five minutes before the help centre closes. Can you answer my question?

A: Depends... does it take five minutes or less to ask and answer?

Q: Which courses do you help with?

A: We provide help in the first and second year computer science courses: Comp 1010, 1012, 1020, 2080, 2130, 2140, 2150, 2160, 2190, and 2280.

Q: Can you help me find a private tutor?

A: Unfortunately, the best we can do is to point you to the university tutor registry.

Q: What courses should I take for my program?

A: You can contact the main CS office for help with course choices. The e-mail address is queries [at] cs (dot) umanitoba (dot) ca.

Q: I would like to e-mail the department to let them know what I think about the help centre.

A: Certainly! The e-mail address is queries@cs.umanitoba.ca.
