September 12 - December 16, 2011:
Monday to Fridays: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The help centre is located on the fourth floor of the Engineering and Information Technology Complex (EITC) E2, room E2-422A. If you take the elevators up to the fourth floor, turn right, and the help centre will be on the right hand side.
Hello, my name is Andrea Mantler. How can I help you?
Q: What is the e-mail address for the help centre?
A: The main e-mail address is helpctr@cs.umanitoba.ca, but the following aliases will also reach me:
(They all go to the same place, so don't use all of them for one e-mail. We have multiple aliases so that you don't have to remember which version of the spelling is correct.)
Q: Can I book an apointment? (Do I need to book an apointment?)
A: No, but don't worry if the room looks full... I rotate through everyone, and will get to you as soon as I can. This allows me to help more people than if I booked appointments for fixed time intervals.
Q: I can't come during the posted hours. Can I see you another time?
A: No, I am paid hourly, and can only see students during the posted hours. However, I have an additional hour per day to answer e-mail and forum questions, so feel free to contact me that way.
Q: It's five minutes before the help centre closes. Can you answer my question?
A: Depends... does it take five minutes or less to ask and answer?
Q: Which courses do you help with?
A: I provide help in the first and second year computer science courses: Comp 1010, 1012, 1020, 2080, 2130, 2140, 2150, 2160, 2190, and 2280. Some professors ask that I restrict my answers to certain types of questions, and refer other questions to them.
Q: Can you help me find a private tutor?
A: Sorry, no. You can try the CSSA, or the university tutor registry.
Q: What courses should I take for my program?
A: Sorry, I also don't help with that. Contact the main CS office. The e-mail address is queries@cs.umanitoba.ca.
Q: I would like to e-mail the department to let them know what I think about the help centre.
A: Certainly! The e-mail address is queries@cs.umanitoba.ca.
