Course Description
- This course will examine topics of interest at the fourth-year level. Specific topics will vary from year to year. Topics will be selected from current research in computer science.
- This Spring 2006 offering of 074.406 provides an introduction to some basic data mining concepts and their applications, in such areas as tracking customer purchase trends, short-term load forecasting in power systems, and discovering unusual folding regions in genome sequences.
- Some potential topics to be covered:
- Discovery of frequent patterns
- Formation of interesting rules
- Clustering and unsupervised learning
- Classification and supervised learning
- Detection of anomalies
- Data visualization
- Applications of data mining in areas such as finance, healthcare, electronic commerce, marketing, intrusion detection, and telecommunications
- Brief introduction on parallel data mining and machine learning
- Credits: 3
- Prerequisite: Departmental permission (and 074.338)
