Speaker: Dr. James Currie Title: Abelian powers and patterns Abstract: Decision problems involving the appearance or non-appearance of patterns in strings have been studied for many years. An Abelian square consists of a non-empty string followed by a permutation of itself. I will outline several methods for studying the avoidability of Abelian squares and cubes, and various powers and patterns. Several problems are open and (in my view) approachable.
