All Things MacOS

I started writing notes to myself, to remember the cool stuff that I encounter on the internet everyday…

This is one of the those random documents that describes printer setup for department printers on a MacOS system.

Table of Contents

Printers

There are three laser printers in the department for general use:

  1. diamond (black&white), ECOSYS FS-4200DNxp, located in E2-564,

  2. coral (black&white), TASKAlfa 6501i, located in E2-445 EITC, and

  3. opal (color), ECOSYS P6035cdn, located in E2-445 EITC.

Driver Setup

Luckily, all the printers are from the same brand (Kyocera), thus I needed to install one set of drivers for all.

Here are the steps:

  1. Fetch the latest drivers (as of May 2021, it is version 52.2021.03.23) from the company’s support website ¹.

  2. Install them by double-clicking the package icon:

Adding Printers

To add a printer on your Mac, follow these steps:

  1. From System Preferences -> Printers & Drivers, press +:
  1. From the list below, select a printer. Note that you’ll see double entries for each printer, but select the one with Kind Bonjour. All the printers in the department are configured to print over AirPrint protocol from Macs.
  1. Let us select Diamond (AirPrint Diamond @ cups), and optionally add its Location (E2-564 EITC). Diamond is a Ecosys FS-4200DN printer, but AirPrint service automatically handles the details. So, no need to speficify a driver here.
  1. After a brief setup, as seen below:
  1. Vola!!! printer diamond is ready to print…

File Servers

All files on Linux and Windows servers are provided via the smb protocol.

⚠️ Keep in mind that although you’re accessing the Linux file server, the authentication is done on a Windows server, thus you need to enter CompSci\<your ID> in the Name field.

Linux

  1. From Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server:

2 Enter the following into the top window:

 smb://sambahost.cs.umanitoba.ca/<your ID>

Windows

Follow the same steps as above to connect the Windows server, except the server now is

smb://plutonium.cs.umanitoba.ca/staff/<your ID>
